People Will Talk…
My daughter ran to me the other day letting me know that she had heard an adult speaking negatively about me.
She said she heard this person talking unkindly about me not only once but twice during the day.
I looked at her concerned and sad face and my heart sank.
You could tell that someone talking badly about someone she loved hurt her very deeply.
I instinctively hugged her then looked into her face.
“Well, we both know what this person said is not true, right? – let’s say a prayer for her”.
We said a short prayer and my daughter seemingly content with that went on her way.
Just one year ago I would have let this type of gossip or criticism hurt me and consume my mind for days.
I would have thought of the hurtful words over and over again.
I would have kept talking with others about it, imagining my next encounter with a pointed remark toward the person responsible, or holding a grudge.
Those activities only give a long undeserved life to the wrong that has been done.
But, I have learned that what people have to say about me, their opinion of me, or what I do or don’t do doesn’t determine my worth.
An intentional and instant decision to not internalize the insult or criticism and to pray for the person really does deflate the whole issue.
It will bring it all back into a Christian perspective – Jesus told us we would be talked about.
I know people will talk. And it helps me to remember that what others think or say of me doesn’t determine my value – God has already lovingly established that! โค
